First Love

A little log sat in the shadows
and watched the fire flicker by,
throwing a dancing light now and then
to her admirer's heart mollify
and as he watched there in wonder
his heart trembled like an aspen leaf
and looked at the yellow flames
with a newfound passion of first love

Ah! her flowing braids
that flamed as she danced
in undying bursts of ecstacy,
to the very music of life
Ah! the blaze of her eye
as she flung fond glances
Ah! the redness of her lips
that sang to the pulse of being

And as the log sat so still,
his maiden's step faltered as she fell-
lower and lower, to the floor
of the cold stone of the fireplace

The little one knew that had to be done,
he smilingly inched to his doom,
and kissed her a kiss of immortal love
bringing her back to roaring life
that he saw with his rejoicing spirit,
which soared upwards to the heavens
and while speeding to the stars, warmed the air
with the smell of sweet sacrifice.
